CREATING A VISION BOARD FOR YOUR BEST CHAPTER YET!

I was chatting with a girlfriend last week about our futures and she said, “Why don’t you make a vision board? That way you can map things out how you’d like to see them.” My immediate response was, “Wait, aren’t I too old for arts and crafts? I thought vision boards were for younger people?”
“Well, my friend, I made one, and I’m certainly not young, and I love it!”, she responded. “It’s hanging on the wall in my workout room and it inspires me every morning. I’m all about reinventing myself, dreaming big, and having a bit of fun along the way, what’s age got to do with it?”
I knew I had to listen, after all I’m all about AGING OUT LOUD – No Limits, No Apologies, No Regrets!” Here’s what she told me:
What Exactly is a Vision Board?
I, first of all, needed some clarification on exactly what a vision board was. She explained that a vision board is essentially a collage of images, words, and symbols that represent the future you want to create. “Think of it like a personal road map, except it’s covered in sparkles and motivational quotes instead of complicated directions,” were her exact words. The idea is that by seeing your goals and dreams laid out in front of you, you’ll stay inspired and focused, especially on those days when the couch seems far more appealing than tackling your to-do list. A vision board also gives you a tangible piece of art to nudge you toward your goals. Made sense I thought.
How Do I Start?
I immediately envisioned myself rummaging through my junk drawer for tape and paper clips, and here’s what she said I’ll actually need:
Poster Board or Corkboard: The bigger, the better.
Magazines, Printouts or Photos: Images that inspire me. (And yes, that old travel brochure from 1992 counts if it still sparks joy, and it does!)
Scissors and Glue: Or double-sided tape if I preferred not to end up with sticky fingers.
Decorative Extras: Stickers, glitter, ribbons, anything that makes my board pop.
Here’s the book she suggested I order as it is crafted for women embracing every stage of life. I like it, and it really got the juices flowing.

Set the Mood
Esme stressed to me that creating a vision board is more than just cutting and pasting, it’s about tuning into my desires and allowing myself to dream without limits. So, why not make it an event? She said she does the following when working on her board.
Plays her favorite music.
Lights a candle or diffuses essential oils.
Invites a friend: A vision board party is a great way to bond, so why not invite a friend from time to time.
Embrace the “No Limits, No Apologies, No Regrets” Mindset
We often censor ourselves when dreaming, my friend says: “Oh, that’s too big,” or “I’m too old for that.” Well, guess what?” she continued. “That’s nonsense. Your best chapter yet might involve traveling through Europe, starting a small business, or learning how to play the violin at midnight. If it sparks joy, slap it on your board!”
She also reminded me: “The only limitations are the ones you impose on yourself, and she was so right! As a matter of fact, AGING OUT LOUD is all about No Limits!
Time to Start
I was finally reassured that I was already ready for the journey. I would start making it happen by coming up with a beginning plan and jumping into the fun part: cutting, gluing, and arranging images and words that resonate with my vision. I wasn’t worried about trying to make it perfect, because I knew that imperfection is part of the charm. She agreed totally and told me to just arrange your clippings in a way that feels natural. Maybe group them by themes like “Travel,” “Health,” “Family,” or “Fashion,”. Hey! Sounds like AGING OUT LOUD!
She also suggested adding in quotes and affirmations that motivated me; pictures of places I wanted to visit and a color palette that spoke to me. She closed with: “If you’re feeling a little extra, sprinkle on some glitter. Sure, it might end up all over your house, but it’s a small price to pay for fabulousness!”
Display It Proudly!
So, I’m about halfway through and having a ball! The best part is that it’s about ME and MY dreams and since what others think doesn’t matter, I’m going to proudly display it on a wall where I‘ll see it throughout the day and be inspired. Each glance will remind me of the life I’m actively creating.
My plan is to take a moment each morning or evening to reflect on my board. Is there a small action I can take today to move closer to one of my goals? As my dreams shift or I achieve certain milestones, I will update or refresh it, as it’s a living, breathing reflection of my journey.
My friend reminded me that a vision board isn’t a magic wand, it’s a tool. To truly bring those dreams to life, you’ll need to back up your images with action. That might mean signing up for a class, planning a trip, or simply making a few lifestyle tweaks. Whatever your goals, your vision board is there to keep you focused, motivated, and excited about what’s next.

I realized after my phone call with Esme, that creating a vision board is like writing a love letter to my future self, it’s a tangible promise that I’m still dreaming, still evolving, and still very much in the game.
Here at “AGING OUT LOUD – No Limits, No Apologies, No Regrets,” we believe that life isn’t about winding down; it’s about winding up to new possibilities. Because if there’s one thing we know, it’s that the best chapters of your life aren’t behind us, they’re the ones you’re crafting right now, one sparkly collage at a time.
